LATEST LOCAL UPDATE
1. Patient explanation of total triage animation

A free animation has been put together for GP practices, which helps explain to patients how care can be accessed during COVID-19. With many changes to the way primary care services are delivered at this time, this video helps encourage patients to continue to seek medical attention where required, as well as outlining the total triage model in simple terms. The free animation is available to download and it is recommend you make use of it. The animation is hosted on the EMIS Now website but can be used regardless of what clinical system is employed in the practice, as the animation does not mention any particular system. Practices could consider adding it to their websites.

2. UHCW telephone advice and guidance

Many thanks for your support during the COVID-19 response by only forwarding the more urgent referrals to UHCW. It has been enormously helpful to support our COVID-19 response.

UHCW has been continuing to provide urgent and emergency surgery in most service areas and delivering all cancer support services through this time. All clinical areas for patients with and without COVID-19 symptoms have been physically separated so that the hospitals can flex up and down other clinical services depending on the changing demands.

For outpatient appointments, during April 2020 over 50% of UHCW’s outpatient appointments were able to be delivered through telephone appointments or virtual clinics. Only patients who absolutely needed to be seen in person were prioritised, ensuring the service can be delivered within social distancing requirements. The feedback from those patients receiving services in this way has been very positive and is being formally evaluated to inform future services.

Next Steps Second Phase Response
UHCW are now planning to step up non-COVID services:

1. Restore services in a phased way which supports all our system health service capacity, promoting messages to the public that they will be contacted when their hospital appointment is being reinstated, to help minimise a likely surge in telephone calls to our hospitals and GPs.
2. Encourage those with worrying symptoms to access services – nationally it is clear that there are patients with other symptoms who have been holding back during this time and they have been encouraged to contact appropriate services.
3. Retain some of the ways of working during Lockdown e.g. virtual outpatients

Routine Referrals
As part of this next phase, UHCW accepts all routine referrals. All referrals will be prioritised and processed by our Specialists based on clinical need. Outcomes for referrals may fall into the following categories:

1. Clinically urgent and booked into an urgent slot (this will be either be virtually or in some cases face to face).
2. Placed on a monitoring list and flagged (each speciality will be reviewing this list regularly)
3. Provide patient and GP with advice
